The tuner

What it is

A built-in tuner that uses your phone's microphone, with a tailored view per instrument family. Open it from the ⋯ menu → Tuner in Practice or Live mode.

Picking your instrument

The instrument picker starts with Yours (the instruments on your profile), then Strings, Keys, Winds, Percussion, and a plain Chromatic mode. Instruments with alternate tunings get a tuning dropdown (each listed with its note names).

String instruments

You see your instrument's headstock with a peg per string: guitar (including 12-string), bass (4- and 5-string), ukulele, mandolin, banjo, and more exotic friends like oud, bouzouki, and cavaquinho. Tap a peg to hear the reference tone, play the string, and watch the cents meter. The tuner follows your lead: it highlights whichever string you actually play, and when a string holds in tune it chimes, locks green, and advances to the next. Swipe sideways to switch instruments.

Piano

A full keyboard. Tap any key for its reference tone, with two extra modes:

• Stretch: applies the natural stretch curve real pianos are tuned with, so a professionally tuned piano reads in tune across the range.
• Guided: walks you key by key: a target ring moves up the naturals, chimes when you lock a note, and advances automatically.

Winds

Play a note and watch the cents meter, great for checking intonation.

Drums

Snare, toms, kick, congas, djembe, and more: hit the drum and the tuner shows its fundamental pitch in Hz, so you can match drums to each other or to a target frequency.

Tips

• Tap Start and allow microphone access the first time. If you denied it, re-allow the mic for tuneup.band in browser settings.
• Tune somewhere quiet: the tuner listens to the loudest pitch it hears.
