Separate a recording into stems
What it is
Stem separation splits a recording into six independent channels (Vocals, Drums, Bass, Guitar, Piano, and Other), so you can mute, solo, and mix each part even if it was recorded as one blob of sound.
When to use it
- A room recording where everything bled into every mic.
- Practicing minus-one against a take that wasn't multitracked.
- Isolating a part to hear exactly what someone played.
Steps
- Find the take in the recording sheet or the session's Assets tab, and tap Separate (in the studio it's on the channel's hold-menu: Separate into stems).
- Pick an engine: each shows what it costs (many are Free).
- Wait for the Separating badge to finish; you can leave and come back.
- The six stems appear as new channels on the take, alongside the original tracks. Takes with stems show a Stems badge.
Good to know
- Separation is never automatic: takes only get split when you ask.
- Separation works best on the five named instruments; anything else lands in Other.
- You can Re-separate with a different engine later; nothing is destroyed.
